Getting Started

Request a site

You can do this on our Service Request page. Please be sure you are authorized to administer web space for your department, or your request may be delayed. If you just want sandbox space to play with WordPress, note it in your request. It should be okay.

Log on to your site dashboard

When your site is commissioned, you’ll receive an email with the login url. It will look something like When prompted, log in with your UIC netID and common password.

Add a logo and header image

Your site will have a default UIC logo and header image included, both of which can be changed. These items are set in the Appearance > Theme Options > Header Settings.

To change your logo, you need to upload a new image to replace the default image. Logo files can be downloaded from You can upload images directly into the field, or add it first to the Media Library and then select to add it here. Select the medium size (300 pixels wide).

For the default header image, you can select from our stock of UIC images available in three sizes — 1000×400, 1000×300, 1000×200 — on this site or use your own images sized to a width of 1000px. When you upload these images, be sure to select “Full Size” when you insert the image.

Add other users

To collaborate with others, go to the user management tool under “Users.” Here you can add people as Editors, Authors, Contributors, and Subscribers. Please contact us if you need to add another Site Administrator.

Configure your website’s menu

Menus in our WordPress network are handled by a special plugin called Advanced Menu Widget. It’s invisible to you in the Plugin list, but you can add, remove, and rearrange your web site’s menu items under Appearance > Menus.

You are free to customize your site’s navigation menu, but we ask that you not alter the common UIC eyebrow menu or the first three text links in the footer menu (Disability Resources, Emergency Information. Privacy Policy).

Add a blog

Plan on blogging regularly? You can select which Page will house your blog. Go to Appearance > Customize to specify your “Posts page.”
